Crochet has been around for decades and it has definitely transcended. Some crochet apparel designs are still around, like swimsuit styles but the crochet designers of today are staying in trend and style. I have even seen a lot of original designs which is making crochet apparel designers competitive to mainstream designers. There is certainly a lane for crochet apparel designers in the mainstream fashion industry. Crochet Urban is the new blog shedding light on the latest best crochet designers in the US and abroad. Posting great interviews, fashion shows, etc you'll get the chance to find out what inspired these amazing crochet designers to start their fry journey threw the world of crochet. The founder of Crochet Urban is Crystal Bumpers and co-founder is Atiya Bumpers. Also the crochet apparel design in this photo is by Crystal Bumpers, the owner and creator of Da Fyne Crochet Designs Company, based in Los Angeles. Da Fyne Crochet Designs has been established since 2006. Creating her own clientele threw door to door sales and marketing, then going on to consignment in boutique on Melrose and in Heavy Hitters clothing store etc. Having the tenacity to carve her own lane with designing crochet apparel and finding her own clientele has stemmed into some new exploration of expansion of her business ventures today. A Personal Interview With Crystal on How & Why Da Fyne Crochet Designs Got Started
I had the amazing opportunity to interview Crystal Bumpers and ask her some questions on March 18 of this year, 2023. I started off by asking her who introduced her to crochet? She said she introduced herself to crochet.
Crystal: "I just so happened to see someone making slippers out of flip-flops. It was amazing to me, so I said that's something I would like to learn. I had already been an entrepreneur and I was looking for a new product that could make me more money, so that made me want to pursue learning about crochet. I seen an older lady crocheting and she volunteered to teach me how to crochet and that's when I first started crocheting."
Crochet is a skill she's acquired since 1997 an actually began her company in 2006. Its 2023 now, so its been over 2 decades since she began mastering her craft. I wanted to know in what ways has crochet changed or improved her life?
Crystal: "The way crochet has improved my life is that I was looking for a product that I can create and I would have no limitation on how much money I could make because it is a handmade product that puts a different status on it and a value as well, and that I'm actually doing apparel. I could work to put my crochet apparel mainstream. I just found that there were a lot of crochet pieces in retail establishments, and so I felt like I was good enough to work at putting my pieces in those retail stores."
There is many different crochet styles, designers can create. There are urban, contemporary, streetwear, etc. She explains to me her preferred style and why.
Crystal: "my preferable style is contemporary wear. I find that it is a more universal and wearable product that a lot of people gravitate to putting in their wardrobe. So I figured if I design pieces that compliment people's wardrobe that they already have, it would be easy for my designs to compliment mainstream fashion designs."
Crochet designs can be done by following patterns and by scratch. Crystal said she preferred to create from scratch ,her style is contemporary, so I wanted to know how she created her designs in particular.
Crystal: "It is contemporary wear, but I definitely create my own patterns and styles I follow the basic structure of contemporary wear, like shorts and skirts. I just add a little different twist, to combining colors as well as I might change up the style of the shorts a little bit, but for the most part they fall in line with the basic construction of contemporary fashion apparel."
She has been in this craft since the late 90s, so she's definitely a veteran in the game. I asked her to tell me what her crochet superpower is, or in other words, what is she extraordinarily good at in crochet.
Crystal: "my crochet superpower is my color combination combination. When I put my colors together, it just creates a whole different energy from my clothing apparel. I can blend colors, I can combine, and blend with block color, so that definitely sets me apart from different designers."
Crystal has created and designed many phenomenal pieces over the years. I was curious to know what design she thinks is the best she ever created.
Crystal: " wow, that's very interesting. The one that a lot of people have seen and given me feedback on is my one piece strappy back boy short set. Basically, it's similar to a bodysuit or you can wear it as a swimsuit. It compliment everyone's body type, it doesn't matter if you are a thick girl a small girl, it'll definitely complement everyone's shape. I've gotten a lot of feedback from that one and I still make that to this day. I created that about 10 plus years ago."
